Keyhole Peeping Across Three Nations in Rome, Italy
While you're wandering around Rome looking at ridiculously old things, climb up the Aventine Hill to the Piazza Dei Cavalieri. Note the orange trees and rose bushes of unimaginable beauty on your way there. Once in the piazza, you're technically in another country—the Republic of Italy recognizes the HQ of the Knights of Malta as a sovereign nation. Look for a large door with a well-worn keyhole, and go ahead—you know you want to—take a peek. Your gaze will take you through a well-manicured garden, across Rome, and will come to rest on the dome of St. Peter's, located in yet another sovereign nation—Vatican City. Eccoci! Three-nation keyhole peeping.
A true hidden gem! After having visited St. Peter's Basilica and going all the way up to through the dome and seeing Vatican City and Rome from the top of St. Peter's really give you inspiration to see it all! What better way to admire St. Peter's than from the top of Aventino Hill. There is a small piazza with a "gate" with giant green doors and a keyhole that holds the grandest view through the gardens straight to St. Peter's Basilica! It may not seem so amazing until you realize that it's about 2 miles away and you are looking through 3 different countries (Rome, Italy; Vatican City; Sovereign Military Order of Malta)!
