Cooling Down With Kauai's Best Shave Ice in Waimea, Hawaii
Zoom past this colorful shack in the town of Waimea, and you'll be sorry. JoJo's Shave Ice is said to have the best shave ice on Kauai, with 60 flavors and combinations to choose from, from rainbow shave ice atop macadamia nut ice cream to "JoJo's Special," a blend of chocolate and butterscotch mixed with vanilla ice cream at the bottom. (Halo halo is on the menu, too—a treat for those looking for more than just ice.) Next to the Waimea Public Library and across the road from Waimea High School, JoJo's is tiny and run-down—a favorite of locals and tourists, who make the trek up to Waimea Canyon or to the West Shore's beaches like Polihale and Salt Pond. The shop's tan, laid-back, half-clothed clientele wander in lazily, while kids sit happily on the bench outside as colorful shave ice melts down the sides of their cups. Another plus: it's dirt cheap.
