Avoiding the Frills in Lee, Massachusetts
Don’t go to Joe’s Diner expecting anything remarkable; just go for an absolutely no-frills experience. Its lack of decor and everyday name (nowadays akin to the term “mom and pop shop”) jibe with its basic menu and low prices. You can imagine why Norman Rockwell, master of classic American scenes, chose it as the setting for his painting, The Runaway. Besides the t-shirts for sale, it doesn’t look like much has changed since those simple days. It’s the perfect place to take a break from all the exquisite restaurants, darling shops, and picturesque views of the Berkshires.
