Since 2001, carnivores have made the pilgrimage to Jar, Suzanne Tracht's dazzling interpretation of retro American cuisine. From a somewhat ordinary facade you enter a gorgeous ode to Modernism right out of Mad Men. A specialty cocktail tempts you from the bar ("Bug Juice" anyone?), while you nibble potato chips that might be the best bar snacks ever. At your table a server suggests Jar's signature pot roast with carrots and caramelized onions, fork tender and delicious. Instead you get the lamb shank with star anise, coriander, and garlic. The char adds smokiness and depth, while the flavorful meat falls off the bone. You find room for dessert, a chocolate pudding that makes you swoon.
