Being Transported in a Japanese Garden in Seattle, Washington

The Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum is a small, overlooked gem of a park . It’s beautifully maintained and a bargain for everyone, especially students and children. If you’re lucky, you can glimpse the soft cherry blossoms during their transient appearance in the spring. Otherwise, contemplate the enormous koi fish, radiating red from just beneath the surface of the pond, or watch as turtles wobbily swim past arching pines and delicate maples. On special days, take part in Chado, an ancient Japanese tea ceremony held at the teahouse inside the garden, and feel as if you’ve been transported across the ocean and to another time without even leaving the city.

Pond turtle

In spring, the Japenese Garden at the UW Abortetum attracts many visitors. The KOI pond relects the vibrant colors of the red, orange and yellow azealea while tutles sun themsleves on rocks that emerge from the shallow end of the pond. This proved to be an irresistable temptation to two young boys. Carefully they moved to the side of of the pond and stretched out their fingers to touch. A dance in slow motion occurred between the boys and the turtle who opened its eyes and stared until the boys moved off.
