Tripping the Desert Fantastic in Landers, California

Ever wondered what it's like to time travel or better yet, make time stand still? Well, just slightly off the grid in the high desert area of California lies the small town of Landers, home to The Integratron. Built by aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and UFO enthusiast George Van Tassel back in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, the all-wood structure lies on a powerful natural vortex of magnetic energy, The Integraton was originally intended to act as a high-voltage electrostatic generator to help regenerate human cell structure; a technique Van Tassel borrowed from a visiting alien (so he said). Today The Integratron is open to the public and offers tours, special events and "sound baths" for those with an interest in physical and spiritual healing. The Integratron; a little bit out of the way and completely out of this world, don't miss it next time you're in the general Palm Springs area.

Giant Rock, Landers, CA

If you plan on visiting the Integratron please make this eerie place your next stop. Located 3 miles from the Integratron, these two landmarks go hand in hand. In ancient times it was considered sacred by the Native Americans of the Joshua Tree, California, area. In the 1950s it was a gathering point for UFO believers. It is located on land which was at that time leased by George Van Tassel, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of UFO conventions. Van Tassel also built the nearby Integratron and a small airport in the vicinity, which he operated from 1947 to 1975. A single large room, which was subsequently filled in, was dug beneath the rock and resided in by a prospector named Frank Critzer during the 1930s and early 1940s. Critzer, a friend of Van Tassel's, perished in a self-detonated dynamite explosion in this room on July 24, 1942, while being investigated by local police. Shortly after the turn of the 21st century, Giant Rock fractured in two, revealing an interior of white granite. The air is thick.

Integratron

Way out in the scattered brush and boulders, a massive white dome marks the spot where science, magic, and sound converge to create The Integratron. Built in the heyday of nuclear science and UFO sightings, this thing is designed with bits of Moses’ Tabernacle, the work of Nikola Tesla, and “telepathic directions from extraterrestrials.” Whether or not you believe in gateways to other dimensions, the structure’s acoustics are exquisite, and you’ve got to try the Sound Bath. Lie on the floor, close your eyes, and let the rich tones of quartz “singing bowls” reverberate around you for a 30-minute sonic healing session. Waves of sound roll around the room, washing into one ear and then the other as if they had taken on tangible form. Located in the Mojave Desert, an “intersection of geomagnetic forces” is said to be taking place all around you. It's undoubtedly a fine place to contemplate the universe for a while.
