Soaking Up the Indigenous Traditions in Tepoztlan, Mexico
Tepoztlán is a tropical mystical mecca surrounded by jagged mountain peaks. The town has fiercely protected its way of life, admirably clashing with everyone from Hernán Cortés to golf course developers. Melt your stress away in one of the town's many stone temazcales, little domed herbal steam baths where you are led in ancient chants, inhale herbal vapors, and then re-enter the world reborn (or, at the very least sweaty, detoxed, and relaxed). Afterward, cool off with an exotically flavored “ice cream of the gods,” Tepoznieves. Check out the pre-Columbian art at the Pellicer Museum and don’t miss the local crafts markets. For a panoramic view, wind your way up a nearby mountain to Tepozteco, a small pyramid dedicated to the God of fertility and pulque (a potable aphrodisiac for you try out yourself back in town).
