Shopping for Seafood With Egrets in Georgetown, South Carolina
South Carolina’s third oldest city is a sleepy little seaport 30 miles south of Myrtle Beach that seems to exist in a time-warp of quiet, oak-lined streets. Independent Seafood, at Winyah Bay’s shrimp dock is authentic coastal South Carolina; plastic tubs of shrimp, tall trays displaying flounder, grouper and other local fishes, scales and a freezer are all you will find at this bare-bones seafood warehouse, except for two egrets who occasionally poach fish from the tables. No fishy smell is proof of freshness, and unbelievably inexpensive prices cause many vacationers to detour here, bringing coolers to fill on the way to and from beach destinations.
