Browsing Art Nouveau in Glasgow

Glasgow's House for an Art Lover is one of several must-see stops for anyone interested in Scottish Art Nouveau, and its principal exponent, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh lived at the turn of the 20th century, and died largely unknown in his time. Today, he is recognized as a key influence in the creation of a distinct Scottish style of Art Nouveau, which is more rectilinear and restrained than its flamboyant French and Belgian cousins. The House for an Art Lover was constructed in the 1990s, based on designs by Mackintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald, who was a talented artist in her own right. Every detail of the house is true to Mackintosh's vision, providing a powerful testimonial to this important Scottish innovator.
