Driving by Gingerbread Houses in Culver City, California
Dotted throughout Los Angeles are the remains of the storybook housing boom of the early 1900s. The Hansel-and-Gretel designs were essentially a fad, and many were torn down in favor of more cookie cutter models. You can’t tour the remaining private homes, but you can gawk at the ogival windows, swayback roofs, pointed turrets, and purposely lopsided construction that set these residences apart from modern pre-fab houses. The Witch’s House in Beverly Hills has a modest moat; the Culver City Hobbit House’s small pond and pirate’s nets will set your imagination flying. Others whimsical homes are hidden in Los Feliz, Alameda, and Hollywood.
