Step Up to the Sun Gate

After trudging step by step through a dry barren path, take that final step up to the Sun Gate and instantly it's as if you've stepped into a 360-degree work of art. That first glimpse of Machu Picchu with the strong mountain peaks caressing the ruins of the ancient Inka village tucked into the rolling hills feels too picture-perfect to be real. But spend a day soaking in every corner of the site — and bonding with the playful llamas — and you'll truly be charmed by how every stone detail bonds together to create a true masterpiece of humankind.

The object's lighting

On the upper plateau on Machu Picchu, the morning sun creates an unusual photo opportunity. The people give scale to the shot. Taken this past May on our vacation to South America. We were lucky that it was not raining as it so often does. We arrived before sunrise and watched as the sun painted itself across the ruins. Imaging a bundt cake pan and that is what the site is like with the center being Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains the rim of the pan.

Clouds lifting off the ruins

To call it a wonder doesn't do it justice. If you are a jaded world traveler, afraid of being underwhelmed because of all you've heard and the pictures you've seen, put your fears aside and go. Now. Before erosion and tourism take their toll on this monument to ancient technology and perseverance. The entire experience, whether you choose the four day hike or take the train from Cusco, culminates in a jaw-dropping, vertigo inducing moment of pure, sheer, speechless amazement.

Machu Picchu

If you’ve so much as stepped over a travel brochure for the Americas, you’ve seen its picture. Machu Picchu is the undisputed champion of the world wonders, the mortal living up to its myth; for now, at least. Keep the brochures under foot here and step lightly up the perpendicular hillsides for an unparalleled landscape, a panorama of Incan mystery and the flora to match. If your plans don’t cater to the historic four day hike from Ollantaytambo, than strap in for the ride. Like all great destinations these days, the Peruvians have rightfully cashed in on every aspect of the journey, whether it be for the late-blooming day-trippers (two taxis, two buses and a train, one-way), the overnighters (Aguas Calientes has decent fare, but the on-site stay for two will set you back), or both (the entrance fees). But this is one tourist trap you just can’t avoid. Pray your hard-earned sol is going to its preservation, and breathe in the day of a lifetime.

Machu Picchu

Running aimlessly through the labyrinth of ruins at Machu Picchu, you feel like a kid in a candy store—with ancient mysteries lining the corridors like candy jars along the counter. Above cascading terraces where crops once grew, lie the temples, altars, plazas, houses, and baths, some of their functions known, some not, and many in that nebulous state of hypothesized purpose and half-known truth. Certainly, follow a guide for an educational tour, but then take one led by the exhilaration of discovery. With no one preparing you in their lecture for what will be around the next corner, each step and turn has a special magic as you bridge the width of history with your imagination. —Written by Shara Johnson
