Mingling With Mink, Muskrats, and the Muzzleloading Set in Virginia
Dragonflies hover over wildflowers in the thick air along the trail to Dobby Creek. The day is still, and the whir of wings is audible from a distance. A pair of mallard ducks drift affectionately into each other, emitting little “clucks” as they twist their necks and preen. It’s easy to get the notion that you’re all alone with the bobcats and bears, coyote and quail at Hardware River Wildlife Management Area in central Virginia. But don’t count on it. Fishermen, riders, bikers, hunters and those who are “just looking” share this with woody oasis with hunters of all types for much of the year. So don a blaze-orange cap and check the hunting season calendar before you set out.
