Meditating to Crashing Waves at a Buddhist Temple in Busan, Korea
With either a quick sip of serenity or a full day of devotion, the haven of the Haedong Yonggung temple will leave you calm and recharged. Buddhist chants echo into the gusting wind and waves crashing at the foot of the sweeping, ornate buildings on plateaus carved into the seaside cliff. The great monk Naong built the temple to host prayers for rain to end a devastating drought, and it now promises to answer "at least one of your wishes." So don't forget to leave a token offering at one of hundreds of little Buddha statues and figurines nesting in cracks and makeshift shrines across the temple grounds. One hundred-won coins and little probiotic yogurt bottles are local favorites.
