Cruising the Charming Guesthouses of Key West, Florida
Key West’s infamous Duval Street has a classy side too: stroll around and admire the fanciful guesthouses along the thoroughfare, each with tropical flair to spare. The plantation-style Garden House covers a city block with its lush grounds, while Victorian antiques abound at the Artist House, and the Mermaid & Alligator features a flawless, plush restoration. Balconies with turn-of-the-century turrets and gingerbread details abound, as do pools loaded with luxe touches.
Anyone can tell you that Key West is a great place to visit. For as small an island as it is, there is alot to see and do. There never seems to be a dull moment. When I go there, I generally like to slowly make my way down Duvall Street, toward Mallory Square. On this particular day, I was almost at the end of the road, when I heard footsteps behind me. It took me awhile to turn around, and when I did, there was this green guy, following me! He seemed very curious about me and where I was going. It reminded me of someone named the Lizard Man who was a fixture at the daily sunset rituals on Mallory Square in the 70's. He always brought lots of critters like this guy. He continued following for awhile, then must have gotten bored and took off. Not before posing for a photo, however. I swear he smiled.
I remember as a kid growing up in Marathon, Florida, my dad used to say that he looked like Ernest Hemingway. He read all his books. He liked Hemingway's carefree attitude toward life. I have to admit there was a slight resemblance. We spent alot of time in Key West. Sloppy Joe's is definitely an institution!. A must stop everytime. I recently took a trip to Pamplona, Spain, another place Hemingway used to like to go. I was pleased to see a statue and gate dedicated to him at the huge bull ring there.
