Dancing Country in the Dance Hall of all Dance Halls in Gruene, TX

Sweat-soaked cowboys in black hats and boots dance alongside twirling little girls hand-in-hand on the pine-wood floor of one of Texas's oldest Dance Halls, Gruene Hall, in Gruene, Texas. Sit a spell on a bench lining the walls under a screen window or on a picnic table out in the yard, and listen to Texas Country at its best—LIVE—the way it was meant to be heard. Grab a cold Budweiser (no hard liquor here), grab your sweetie and Two Step or Texas Swing your way across the room to the stage. If you don't know how, sit back and watch while some six year old and her daddy show you. After all, This is Texas.

If you could take just one photo: Gruene Hall

Wow – George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker, Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Hal Ketchum, Bruce and Charlie Robison, and many more played and still play here. Oldest dance hall in Texas, great intimate sitting, real old-time dance hall with propped up wooden shutters, overhead fans and a beer garden out back. It’s Texas to the bone. Check out the music schedule at their website and take a trip to the Texas Hill Country for a Texas music, boot-scootin’, beer drinkin’ good time! If you could take just one photo: Gruene Hall

Everything is bigger in Texas - especially the secrets. Gruene, Texas is a tiny Texas treasure that treats thrifty travelers to tubing trips, tasty tablegatherings and timeless two-stepping. Rewind to 1878 in a town still green and friendly. An all day event involves floating the river through the hillcountry, shopping for antiques, eating at a cotton gin turned restaurant and two-stepping at the oldest dancehall in Texas. The best part about Gruene is that all the spots are across the street from eachother. Everything is bigger in Texas, including Gruene, the secret hiding place for truly Texas culture.

If you could take just one photo: Gruene Hall

Deep in the heart of Texas Hill Country lies a slice of Lone Star Heaven - Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in the state, built in 1878. Texans like their dance halls the way they like their boots - broken in - and Gruene Hall is just that. From the creaky screen door to the scuffed wood floor to the roar of the old box fans, it wears its history with pride. The Wall of Fame speaks for itself. Bo Diddley, Merle Haggard, Stevie Ray, and of course, Willie, have all taken the stage. Living legend or local favorite, you'll always find great live music. You'll find a bit of Hollywood too - John Travolta worked his magic on the dance floor for scenes from the movie "Michael". The fun doesn't wait for the sun to go down; afternoons you'll find families lunching at picnic tables or pitching horseshoes out back.Gruene Hall is an easy drive from San Antonio and Austin. Make a day of it and take in the sights and shops of historic Gruene, or stay the week-end and tube the river, another Texas tradition. Two-stepper, day-tripper, or weekend warrior, you won't want to miss this gem, so pop a top on a Shiner and let yourself go Gruene.

Gruene Hall

Boot scoot across the floor of Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in the Lone Star State. Built in 1878, it embodies rustic charm with a tin roof, chicken wire window screens and no heat or air conditioning. Although it’s temperature-challenged, the talented songwriters and musicians that take the stage make it well worth the sweat. A fun-loving group of locals that hangs out in the front bar is the welcome committee of sorts. They’re talkers, so pull up a stool and hear stories about good times, good people and good music.
