Indulging a Taste for Nature in Sandwich, Massachusetts
The Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen has a storybook feeling, appropriate given that the briar patch inspired children’s author Thornton Burgess. The walking trails through the woods are cool and green, the wildflower garden sunny and bright. Aromas from both indoors and out vie for your attention. Outside, it’s the flowers, a tangled medley of colors abuzz with bees and visitors. The mix of names tickle the fancy: Herb Robert and Rose Campion, Obedient Plant and Prickly Pear, Forget-me-not and Creeping Thyme. Indoors delights of a different kind await—pots of jam bubbling on the stoves in a hundred-year-old kitchen. You’re welcome to walk through for a look (and a whiff) or sign up for a class and make your own. Assorted jams and local honey are also available in the gift shop as a delicious souvenir.
