Following the Semana Santa Worshippers in Granada, Spain
The first sight of the Semana Santa worshippers with their pointy wizard hats can be quite startling to anyone familiar with America’s racial history. But the brightly colored caps—which can range from black, red and even the unsettling white—are a part of the holiest celebration in Spain, when there are daily processions of religious figures and anyone who feels like following them. The sound of trumpets and drums accompany the march through Granada’s narrow lanes. They carry huge icon altars of Jesus or Mary adorned with candles and stop the procession even if a single flame is extinguished. It’s a fascinating time to visit, but the plodding processions (often straight uphill) can make traveling around the city an impossibility as streets may be closed for several hours!
