Exploring the Deep on Dry Land in Gloucester, Massachusetts
The tanks of the sea pocket lab at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center display plants and animals from local coastal habitats. But inside the center, you can glimpse a more distant seascape—Stellwagen Bank, a plateau on the seafloor at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay. The exhibit takes you on a virtual visit to the National Marine Sanctuary, which hosts a wide variety of fish, whales, dolphins, and seals. Videos and 3-D models let you scan the sea life and discover the scattered shipwrecks that lie on the ocean’s bottom. It’s a unique window on a strange world that sits right next door.
