Flying Model Planes at Glider Field in Long Beach, California
You’ll see them before you hear them—that is if you hear anything besides the whistle of wind rushing over the wings of the soaring model planes that turn the far north end of the 400-acre El Dorado Regional Park into a veritable air show. On most days, you’ll find a gaggle of middle-aged men flying gliders and electric powered fixed-wing craft from a hill overlooking the most reclusive of the park’s four lakes. Those waiting a turn at the controls gather beneath the nearby trees and talk shop. Show the slightest interest, and you’ll have your ear talked off. No mere toys, these kit-builds fly high enough to occasionally warrant a visit from the FAA.
