Dancing Under the Stars at Garner State Park in Concan, Texas

Ditch your swimsuit for your summer best when night falls at Garner State Park along the beautiful Frio River in Concan. Although tubing and kayaking in the pristine river waters top the list of daytime activities, the nightly dances at the park’s pavilion have been a summertime tradition for more than 50 years. Generations of teenagers have poured on perfume and braved sunburns to bust a move at what is known as the oldest outdoor dance in Texas.

Garner State Park

As I see it, there are two different kinds of hiking, one, with the family or friends, and two, solo. Both offer a completely different type of reward. Last year my wife, our two dogs and I visited Garner State Park in the beautiful hill country about a half hour north of Uvalde. It’s out in the middle of nowhere but don’t get me wrong, this is one of the most popular parks in the state of Texas and from mid May to late fall you will literally share the river and grounds with hundreds of other campers. On these weekends, I wouldn’t call this a get away from it all location. Far from it.

Looking down at the winding Frio River from the edge of Old Baldy is one of the highlights of any trip to Garner State Park. The rocky trails on this "mountain" twist and climb up to 1,000 feet. As you make your way around the bends, notice the caves, rock formations, animals, birds, and especially the amazing views of the Texas Hill Country. Crystal Cave is a favorite spot on the hike. Step inside this cool, moist cavern and shine your light on the crystals on the walls, floors, and ceiling. There are miles of trails both for families and more skilled hikers and bikers.
