Dancing to Supra Funky Detroit Beats in Detroit, Michigan
Funk Night is a celebration of that authentic groove (James Brown, Marva Whitney, Charles Sherrell, etc.) played on original 45s. A crowd of beautiful, smart, happy funksters pack the joint every last Friday of the month for this supreme occasion. You will dance your legs off, replenish your spirit, and watch steam pump out your pores on that brisk walk back to your car (guaranteed). The setting: the fifth floor of an old industrial complex converted to a live/work space for local artists. Out of nowhere, this beloved event won the title of America's Best Dance Party in Paper Magazine's 2008 NightLife Awards—proving that Detroit has as much soul as it ever did!
Editor's Note: This article describes funk night at the Russell Industrial Center, it has since moved to a permanent home at the Majestic.
