Walking to Pittsburgh via the C&O and Great Allegheny Passage, MD
Time was, the only way to get from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh was by airplane or car. Now you can just walk. A 30-year endeavor to link the two cities by nature trail will be completed when three miles of trail gap are connected near Pittsburgh next year. To get there, turn right at the bottom of the stairs in Georgetown and just keep going. Along the C&O Canal’s towpath, you’ll pass farmland and horse country, meeting bikers, kayakers, runners, and fishermen. The route connects to the Great Allegheny Passage at Cumberland, Maryland. Hiking “The Narrows” adjacent to the Western Scenic Railroad, expect the view to range from serene to thrilling, depending on the season. Beyond await mountain tunnels, deep gorges cut by the Youghiogheny River, forests, meadows, and Steel City itself. Walking, yes indeed.
