Being Awed by the Monolith in Frogner Park in Oslo, Norway
Among all the 212 big, healthy nudes in Oslo's Frogner Park, your eyes will be drawn towards the Monolith Plateau, where a column rises proudly, 14 metres into the air. Carved from one block of granite, the Monolith consists of 121 figures, climbing towards... what? The sculptor Gustav Vigeland refused to assign a meaning to his works. To him, the statues depicted life and the Monolith belonged to the world of the imagination. So the viewer is left to decide. Some suggest man's yearning for heaven; others, more earthly purposes.
