Fifty acres of green space smack in the middle of one of the country's busiest urban areas, the park is a refuge for city dwellers all year long. If you visit in the colder months, though, the Common boasts one attraction you should be sure to seek out: beneath bare trees strung with twinkle lights sits the Frog Pond, an open-air skating rink which operates from November to March. There's something charmingly low-budget about the Frog Pond—it's no Rockefeller Center, for sure. But it's festive, cheerfully lit, and never prohibitively mobbed. Top-40 hits on the sound system set the mood, bringing out the socially awkward seventh grader in all of us; a snack bar offers hot chocolate and other seasonal goodies. And with admission at only four bucks, it's a great (and inexpensive) date. The Frog Pond is a little dorky, but ultimately a great time—just like Benjamin Franklin. And Boston herself.
