Breaking Out Your Best Nancy Kerrigan at Frog Pond in Boston, MA

Ice skating in Massachusetts usually means one of two things: trudging a quarter mile through the woods to a less-than-regulation-size frozen pond full of logs and abandoned lawnmowers or 5 a.m. hockey practices in a freezing cold rink with an audience of overly competitive parents. Take a break from sub-par conditions at the Frog Pond in Boston Common where you can rent skates, sip on hot chocolate and triple axel until you're frostbitten and miserable. The outdoor rink's open from November through mid-March to satisfy all your Olympic hopes and dreams...

Sure, roses and chilled champagne say romance, but why not rosy cheeks and a chilly smooch? Ice skating, depending on your skill level, means holding hands as you glide gracefully across the ice or hugging each other for dear life to keep from falling. Either way you wind up in the arms of the one you love at the Frog Pond on Boston Common. Rent skates or bring your own, and take a break to enjoy hot cocoa at the snack bar. It’s an outdoorsy rendezvous in the heart of Boston.

When you think Boston, you think Ben Franklin, Cheers—and the Boston Common. Fifty acres of green space smack in the middle of one of the country's busiest urban areas, the park is a refuge for city dwellers all year long. If you visit in the colder months, though, the Common boasts one attraction you should be sure to seek out: beneath bare trees strung with twinkle lights sits the Frog Pond, an open-air skating rink which operates from November to March. There's something charmingly low-budget about the Frog Pond—it's no Rockefeller Center, for sure. But it's festive, cheerfully lit, and never prohibitively mobbed. Top-40 hits on the sound system set the mood, bringing out the socially awkward seventh grader in all of us; a snack bar offers hot chocolate and other seasonal goodies. And with admission at only four bucks, it's a great (and inexpensive) date. The Frog Pond is a little dorky, but ultimately a great time—just like Benjamin Franklin. And Boston herself.
