Whenever we want some outdoor fun, rugged landscape and a bit of a hike with some beach exposure, we pack a picnic and head to Fort Funston. If it's a clear day and the hangliders are out... we rejoice! The walk down is blissful, up can be arduous. Watch out for the packs of doggies, it's a dogwalkers heaven, but most are friendly and professional. The surf can be treacherous, but on a hot day running in the waves is hours of fun as is sliding down the sandy slopes. It causes beach erosion but is oh so fun. You may see sand dollars, jelly fish and folks on horseback! The parking is plentiful and you feel like you are far from the city and yet you are so close!
