Combining History, Music, and the Sea in Newport, RI
Once an important U.S. coastal fortification, Fort Adams now serves as a pleasingly spacious state park. Each summer, the site provides the ideal setting for the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, events that draw tens of thousands of spectators to the area. During the rest of the year, you'll find the park to be wonderfully quiet. Meander the interesting system of tunnels and climb to the top of the 19th-century fortress for spectacular ocean views. The sense of history, both musical and military, combined with the kind sea air may cause you to push back those lunch plans.
