Exploring Florida's History in Tallahassee, Florida

Maybe it’s the cattle drive moving off in the distance, or the colors of the fading day—whatever it is, Christopher Still’s evocation of Florida at the time of the Civil War really works. The painting, which hangs in the chambers of the Florida House of Representatives, is called Reflections on Ocean Pond, recalling a quiet place near Olustee, where the state’s largest battle of that war was fought. Though this painting was commissioned as part of a series to illustrate Florida's history, it rises above that, drawing you in to older times, and into the quiet landscapes of today’s Florida, off the beaten path.
