Enjoying Festival of the Sahara in Douz, Tunisia
Douz is an oasis at the edge of the Sahara. It looks familiar to millions who've never been to North Africa because it served as the filming location for Tatooine. That's right, Luke Skywalker is from here. But the Arab culture on display at the Festival of the Sahara should be enough to make you look past Star Wars and enjoy the town of Douz on its own merits. Camel marathons, Arab horses ridden by daring riders, a Bedouin marriage, and sloughi desert hunting dogs catching rabbits are the principal features. Music and dance from North Africa is performed throughout the festival. The annual poetry contest run by the famous desert poet, Abdellatif Belgacem, is a highlight, too.
