Tripping Over Tree Trunks in Hermanus, South Africa
In this hotspot of the smallest yet most diverse floral kingdom on Earth, Fernkloof Nature Reserve, you wander through milkwood trees that were saplings before Diaz rounded the Cape. Step over the twisting trunks and branches of these ancient trees that might have inspired Tolkien in his youth to invent the forests of Middle Earth. Picnic in the grass along the forest’s edge. Take a trail into the mountains through trees that include Cape beech, wild peach, fuchsia, mountain cedar, African holly, not to mention untold types of fynbos in the meadows. Ponder proteas and veld flowers in season. A day’s hike into the mountainous wilderness along the trails above Hermanus reveals a waterfall, a feature of note for hikers.
