Feeling Small Beneath the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, Thailand
Gold — everywhere. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo) is full of gold, shiny metals, precious gems and towering statues. The sunshine beating down makes everything sparkle, giving the temple a timeless quality. Everything looks new, yet it’s hundreds of years old. The Buddhist monks wandering around this corner of Bangkok’s Grand Palace know that life is just a flicker in time, and the agelessness of the temple only makes that clearer. The Emerald Buddha itself is surprisingly small compared to the grandeur surrounding it, but again, you think, perhaps none of us are as big as we imagine.
