Reaping the Bounty of the Salinas Valley in Moss Landing, California
As you hug the coast on Highway 1 between Monterey and Santa Cruz, produce stands dot the road like hitchhikers, begging you to stop with alluring signs like “Avocados—5 for $1” and “Artichokes—10 for $1.” Before you know it, you’re pulling over to partake of some of these tasty treats before continuing on your way. Known as the “salad bowl of the world,” the surrounding Salinas Valley provides much of California’s rich bounty, all of which is displayed at the largest of these roadside attractions—the Farm Fresh Produce stand. And as you walk the rows of this edible rainbow, you will certainly not be alone as more and more cars are tempted off the highway by the prospect of a fresh fruit smoothie, a warm apple pie, or a giant green salad.
