Frolicking Through Fairy Tales in Turner, Oregon
Equal parts fun, creepy, and psychedelic, Enchanted Forest is a homegrown amusement park located in an actual forest. The best part is Storybook Lane, where you can meet Alice and the hookah-smoking caterpillar, wander past waterfalls of fluorescent goo in the dwarves’ mining cave, and poke your head into the gourd-prison of Peter Pumpkin Eater’s wife. The park also has a Wild West area (where kids can feel “tipsy” in the drunken simulation chamber), a saturation-guaranteed log ride, and a comedy theater, which shows slapstick versions of fairy tales (often with feminist twists). If your favorite part of amusement parks is pants-wetting fear, try either the Ice Mountain Rollercoaster (100 feet tall!) or the Haunted House, complete with ax murderer. When the kids are begging for Disneyworld this summer, take them to Enchanted Forest—it may not be as glamorous, but it’s certainly weirder.
