Collecting a Vast Array of Modern Art in Jamaica, Vermont
Don’t be surprised if, upon your visit, the eponymous owner/curator of this gallery offers you a cup of coffee—she and her artist husband, whose work hangs in a corner of the space, live upstairs. Mom and pop as it is, the Beckwith Gallery's vision is strictly serious art; you won’t find any kitsch, craft art, or Americana on the walls and displays. Elaine has brought decades of art expertise to this small village, and created a gallery space full of unique paintings, drawings, and sculpture from around the country. Roughly one-third of the space is devoted to local artists; the rest, she says, comes from artists whose singular vision comes through clearly in their works. Beyond that criterion, she does not limit her collection to any particular medium or movement, and the wonderful variety of pieces is reflected in that philosophy.
