Making Sense of the Tafoni Formations in Woodside, CA

If you dig geological rarities or are just looking to take a leisurely hike, trek to the Tafoni Sandstone Formations in the El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve. The hike to the formations leads you down into the folds of the forest and back up again, hitting your senses with earthy smells and filtered light. In these woods, the human roar falls silent. The sandstone formation looks as though a team of sculptors with wildly different styles went to work on the same piece of stone. It is scooped and dented, pushed and pulled with honeycomb formations at the base. It’s spectacular to appreciate what nature can do when given the time.

El Corte De Madera Creek

Skyline cuts through the redwood forests of San Mateo County, showcasing scenery that makes you feel like a character from another era. It’s a popular road for motorcyclists, but they aren't the only one’s on two wheels who make this area their playground. El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve takes you off the pavement and launches you into the forest. It has enough trails to keep you biking all day, and a few technical loops to give the thrill seekers an adrenaline boost. A thousand smells pelt your face as you cycle amongst the aged trees and undergrowth. Go on a week day and it’s likely you’ll have the playground all to yourself.
