Chugging Through the San Juans in Durango, Colorado
Hop aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Steam Railroad to learn a valuable lesson—the old days were not so glamorous. At first you’re fooled by the first-class cabins’ plush furnishings, but as the engine chugs up mountain passes, clouds of black soot soon layer your skin and clothing. As the train cuts through the heart of the San Juan Mountains, however, it becomes clear that it's worth braving the smoke for the view. Hugging the shore of the Animas River, the train passes otherwise inaccessible roadless peaks and meadows on its way to the charming, tumbledown town of Silverton.
