Feeling the Vibe in Downtown L.A., California

Commercial galleries, museums, and non-profits bury their ideological differences in favor of putting on an eye-popping collective show of exhibitions. From highbrow to lowbrow, digital art to sculpture to lowrider graffiti t-shirt art, the creativity spills—along with you—out onto the streets, where the locals bring their own game for visitors by staging impromptu concerts and blocking the sidewalks with handmade wares. On the second Thursday of every month, the Downtown Art Walk offers a chance for strollers to immerse themselves on a self-guided exploration of the bohemian energies of this increasingly chic area, centered around Main Street. If you can't afford the work inside the gallery, then maybe a papier-mache skull for $10 outside will fill that space back home.

Downtown Art Walk. It’s where you go, on a Thursday night, (second Thursday of every month), in the open space of Downtown. Gallery expositions featuring underground-pop art, pub-crawlers stumbling arm-in-arm, vendors selling Dia De Los Muertos relics. It’s a sight to behold. You’ll probably end up coughing up $10 dollars for parking, unless you win the lottery and find an open meter. There’s live music in the street, glow-in-the-dark exhibitionists, and vegan hot-dog stands. You’ll find the culture that you so adamantly insist is lacking in L.A. (even if it’s for one night per month). Admire art, chew a churro, and get your head buzzed at the open-late Bolt Barbershop (460 South Spring Street).

Downtown Art Walk

America has more space than ever. Sure, enormous deserted factories and warehouses aren’t the most desirable locations, but its how this space is used that can spark greatness. The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk smacks the streets the second Thursday of every month. Snake through the jam-packed, all-ages crowd and bottleneck into galleries of all kinds with art at all prices. The gourmet food trucks are out in full aromatic force as well as the live music and parties of all scales. There’s enough art for everyone. Find your fix and unearth a gem in old banks, hidden alleys and paint-speckled warehouses. In a city where downtown is an afterthought, it’s comforting to know that thought is an artistic one.
