Hiking the Trails at Spruce Creek in New Smyrna Beach, Florida
A little over a mile down a kidney-shaking, washboard dirt road is a circular clearing. This is the parking area for the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve. Named for a prominent artist, the preserve offers several options for exploration. Motorized transportation isn't allowed, so bring your horse, mountain bike, or hiking shoes. Well-marked sandy, root-crossed trails offer glimpses of deer, raccoon, and other critters' tracks. Follow the trails to high sandy bluffs overlooking the winding, tea-black, tannin-stained Spruce Creek. Scramble down the banks if you're so inclined. Quietness reigns as the natural Florida landscape unfolds.
