Giving Your Dog the Best Swim of His Life in Donner Lake, California
Whoever said "Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job" clearly never threw a stick into the alluringly hospitable waters of Donner Lake, itself redefining the color azure. The heavily forested eastern shore sees no one but exuberant pups and their notably cheerful owners enjoying a morning workout or afternoon break. In truth, it's impossible not to make a half-dozen friends upon arrival (both two legged and four legged), and it may only be a few throws before you're swimming as well. The striking smell of sugar pines, the railroad etched high into the cliff, the mellow quiet (with intermittent splashing), the crisp and pure water famous for its immaculate clarity--it's no wonder the dogs refuse to leave.
Snowshoeing through Donner State Park in the winter has many rewards. Animal footprints appear in the snow - I've seen deer, rabbit, raccoon and coyote tracks. The peacefulness of the park may be broken by a train whistle or the chug chug of a freight train pulling up to Donner Summit with 4 "pullers" and 2 "pushers". When Donner Lake appears, it can be foggy, or perfectly clear. Or as in this photo, the water may be crystal clear and the shoreline frozen with ice crystals sitting on top. It is a magical place in the winter.
Just wear warm clothes, put on your snowshoes or cross country skis, and enjoy nature at its best.

There lies the lake in all its grandeur, beckoning you. Donner Lake is a special place -- Close to Lake Tahoe, but without the immense crowds, noise, or traffic. Nearby eateries and bars in Truckee have a small town vibe while hiking trails and water activities permeate the landscape. You can lie low or take to the trails, water, or town. Whatever you desire -- If you are looking for a getaway from your getaway, look no further than Donner Lake.

Ski the summit at Boreal, fish at Donner Lake, or take a short jaunt to South Lake Tahoe and experience the thrill of live tournament poker.
