Recapturing the 1800s Latin Quarter in Ybor City, Florida
The scent of cigars and cafecitos wafts through the air along the brick-lined streets in Tampa's Latin Quarter, Ybor City. From the wrought-iron balcony of the Don Vicente de Ybor Historic Inn, gaze onto the heart of this bustling historic district filled with ornate buildings, galleries and old cigar factories turned into trendy eateries and shops. Appointed with antiques, this impressive boutique hotel was renovated to capture the original pink stucco and white marble opulence intended in 1895 by the village founder and hotel namesake.
In the basement of this gorgeous hotel lies a fantastic club that is only open for special occasions. One night, whilst wandering somewhat inebriated around the hotel, a friend and I stumbled down to this lounge. There were rumors that it used to be a morgue, and quite possibly haunted.
Whispering to each other in hushed breaths, we explored the area in our fuzzy state, shushing and giggling. Laughs soon turned to fright as we came across an eerie statue that someone/something had marked with an inverted cross.
We quickly moved on to more hospitable areas of the hotel, and breathed a sigh of relief as we once again returned to the lush surroundings and comforts of the main level.
