Sampling the Sublime at the Delano in Miami Beach, Florida
With an enormous chessboard worthy of Alice in Wonderland, a whimsical outdoor canopy bed, hammocks slung from citrus trees, and an elevated infinity pool with a table and chairs in the shallow end, The Delano is at once elegant and wacky—the sort of hotel Lewis Carroll might have dreamed up. The public spaces are draped in billowy white sheers and crammed with art by the likes of Man Ray and Salvador Dali and furnishings by Antoni Gaudi and Mark Newson. The rooms are spectacular (and expensive), and the Blue Sea sushi bar offers astounding choices, among them, caviar and kobe rolls and Asian creme brulée. If you can't afford to stay, at least dress up and go to lunch.
