Waiting in Dave's Disco Line in Charleston, South Carolina
If it weren't for the greasy-sweet smell of frying seafood rising out over the neighborhood, a daytime person might miss the unassuming Dave's Carry-Out entirely. This place doesn't start hopping until around midnight and doesn't stop until it closes its doors at around 4AM. If you're used to New York City lines, the line at Dave's won't faze you, but for Charleston, it's a significant queue. You'll meet both moms just getting off of their work shifts and college kids clamoring for grease to fuel a long night of boozing in this line, and in typical Southern fashion, everyone is friendly. While you wait, people leave with their packages, often eating from their open containers, which heightens the longing for the moment when you will be leaving with your food. At the grill stands Dave himself, wiping sweat from his brow as he fries up shrimp, scallops, fish, wings, and fries, all served up with salad on the side. These delicacies are lightly battered, but still greasy enough to be delicious; wholeheartedly worth waiting for.
