Warding Off Evil Spirits at a Fire Festival in Fukuoka, Japan
It's time to bring that loincloth out of retirement. Every year on January 7th men clad in not much more than their birthday suits race through Daizenji Shrine carrying burning torches to ward off evil spirits. It's a cold night out, so after their parade they huddle around huge bonfires. Don't worry, you don't have to be a He-man to enjoy the night. Warm your appendages rubbing elbows with the scantily clad men, or take a shot from a passing sake bottle. Either way, when it gets dark make sure to jostle your way to the front of the crowd. Six 1200 kilo torches are lit in the shrine's center, and the crowd goes crazy. It's nicknamed "demon night" for a reason.
