Strolling the Sand Dunes in Ipswich, Massachusetts

Crane Beach embodies New England beauty and charm. Unlike many of the region's beaches, it is sandy and soft and the water is surprisingly temperate. At low tide, visitors roll up their pant legs and walk out hundreds of feet across sandbars crisscrossed by ripples and streams and dotted with a variety of seabirds seeking clams in the shallows. The beach stretches for miles, framed by grassy dunes and a sapphire blue sea. It is particularly spectacular at sunset, and in autumn when surrounding maple trees set the landscape on fire. Nearby Russell Orchards is a great place to stop for a picnic, and its pick your own fruits, handmade ice cream and baked goods are always a great deal. Likewise, the Clam Box restaurant in town is the best place to enjoy fried clams and other local favorites.

Crane Beach

Down deep, you're an artist, a writer, the haiku sensation the world doesn't know it needs (or maybe you're a budding vandal-- no judgment). Head to Crane Beach, where you'll be inspired by kindred spirits who have stenciled the lines of a poem on anything nailed down: "We burn like the sun" and "...wave by wave the water wakes and sighs" among them. The moistwhite sand awaits your words. Grab a twig or shell and unleash your creative genius...it's cheaper than a journal and couldn't be more environmentally friendly. Once you've expressed yourself, don't be shy-- take a few snaps and share your message with the world.
