Gator-Cruising Through Swamplands in Miami, Florida
Snakes and gators and things that slither seem far, far away to those partying in the glitzy glamour of Florida’s Miami Beach. Actually, it’s only about 20 miles to the massive Everglades National Park, home to those dubious airboats that can be seen skimming the surface of gator-filled swamplands in shows like CSI Miami. From a shack on the side of the highway, those with adventurous spirits can actually climb into one of these flat, air-propelled contraptions driven by crusty swampsters who yell out things like "C'mon Gator!" And sometimes the gators actually come when they are called—right up to the boat as it sputters and swings and sways through the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Keep your feet and fingers in the boat, and your eyes peeled for a Purple Gallanule or Everglade Snail Kite.
