Taking a Ski Break for Lunch at the Cliff House in Stowe, Vermont
Mount Mansfield’s swanky Cliff House restaurant is perched 3,625 feet above sea level at the top of of the gondola. Floor-to-ceiling windows open to a view of the entire Stowe region, with the silhouettes of snow-covered evergreens framing this beautiful picture. Once inside the warm and cozy chalet, drop your boots and gear in the cubby-hole-lined storage room, then duck inside the dining room and watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. Sip a rich hot chocolate laced with peppermint schnapps while you wait for warm staples like butternut squash soup, venison chili, lamb stew, lobster risotto, a heavenly smoked cheddar soufflé, and an irresistible pot of cheese fondue for two. Like most things Vermont, all ingredients come from local farms like Hollandeer or Winding Brook, and when it’s time to head back out for the afternoon’s runs, you’ll have refueled in both style and organic comfort.
