Sleeping Like an Owl at Clear Lake Lookout in Mount Hood, Oregon
In the summer, Clear Lake Lookout is still used as a fire tower. During the ski season, the 360-degree view of snow-covered countryside is put to use for less pragmatic purposes, with the lookout transformed into a lofty winter getaway. Located deep within the Mount Hood National Forest, getting there does require a bit of effort—cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling three miles through the white stuff to reach it—but once there, you get to experience Oregon’s winter beauty like never before. Be warned: This is no luxury hotel. Amenities include solar lighting (that is, don’t forget your lantern), an outhouse, and a wood stove, so be prepared for a ruggedly glorious experience with a night quiet so deep you can hear the snow crackle as it settles.
