Sailing the United States' Oldest Oyster Sloop in Oyster Bay, NY
With echoes of the Great Gatsby and country estates, Oyster Bay is nestled in the heart of Long Island’s Gold Coast. Steeped in history, celebrity, and still a busy commercial oyster fishery, the bay provides an interesting backdrop for both sailors and landlubbers alike. The outstanding natural beauty of the bay and surrounding area cannot be appreciated any better than from the water. The Christeen is a beautifully restored, 40’ gaff-rigged oyster sloop that was built locally in 1883 and is now operated by the Waterfront Center. Her volunteer crew offers a rich and often humorous view of local lore while guests enjoy a picnic, the fresh air, and the unique perspective of the bay and Long Island Sound.
