In order to escape extreme weather and still get around downtown, wise Chicagoans head underground. The Chicago Pedway, a piecemeal network of passageways, meanders underneath government buildings, hotels, stores, and train stations. Follow a map printed from the website, or just descend at an entry point and blindly wander this 40-block-long maze of corridors, stairs, and aboveground skyways. Spotting the Chicago Pedway compass logo on doors may help, and if your navigation is successful, you’ll pass by food courts, newsstands, barbershops, and maybe even the old-fashioned clock repair shop, all without encountering a single snowflake.
