Shopping Historically at City Market in Charleston, South Carolina
A tourist’s haven, historic City Market in downtown Charleston is a series of 4 open-air buildings flanked by quaint, palmetto lined streets of stucco and brick, where plodding horses draw carriages with tour guides hawking the city’s history. A stroll through the Market buildings, constructed in the 1800s, is a trip past goods ranging from elegant to kitschy: expensive, hand-woven Gullah sweetgrass baskets; t-shirts both silly and understated; vibrant batik clothing; one-of-a-kind crafts; sparkling silver chains; Low Country specialty foods; multi-hued pashmina scarves; even fresh produce. Although it is open from 10:00am to dusk 365 days a year, savvy shoppers come early or late to avoid the crush of bargain hunters.
