Savoring Big Booming Reds at Cathedral Ridge Winery in Hood River
I dislike high-falutin wine talk and love mouth-filling reds, so imagine my delight when the sommelier said, “we make Big Reds here.” Ah! The Columbia Gorge compresses a climate that spans the Rhine to the Rhone in 40 miles. Cathedral takes advantage, producing riesling to…Rock Star Red, a Bordeaux-meet-Rhone blend of cabernet and syrah. I loved it: the amusingly titled Bordheauxd Red (a tribute to Gorge wind boarders), the wild-berried syrah, reserve cab/merlot, and a zin that can stand root to fruit with California. Pinot drinkers, yes, they make two, plus plenty of whites and rosés. The view is inebriating. The vineyard teeters over the Gorge; the vine rows lead your eye straight north to Mt. Adams. Turn around and Mt. Hood winks back. Buy a bottle and picnic on the grounds.
